Community Service News
Members of the Community Service Committee continued to maintain the Peace Pole Garden in White Park, meeting in August to spread mulch which will help to control weeds and help the garden's soil to retain moisture. If you haven't had an opportunity to check out the group's work there, try to go - after a period of neglect, the garden is looking well cared for and again adds to the enjoyment of the park for all who pass by it -- something we can all be proud of. Including more native pollinator plants is a goal, so please keep that in mind if you have divisions to share next spring and summer!
SEED EXCHANGE
We would like to gauge member interest in having a seed exchange. Seed saving is the practice of keeping seeds or other reproductive material from flowers, vegetables, grains, and herbs, for use from year to year. It's a nice way to share well-loved plants and flowers. Many types of plants produce seeds that can be saved from one year and sown the next. Once the pods have turned dry and brown, seeds are removed and can be kept in small envelopes in a cool, dark place until the next growing season.
If you are interested, here are some beginner's guides to saving seeds: https://www.themarthablog.com/2021/09/saving-flower-seeds.html
If there is member interest in an exchange, there will be more information to follow, but for now you can start harvesting seeds whenever you (and they) are ready. Remember to note name and color of flowers on the envelope you store your seeds in, to avoid mystery plants!
Art & Bloom 2025!
Greetings, members! Itās still hot outside, but itās not too early to think about the coming seasons. While our 22nd Annual Art and Bloom isnāt until January 2025, it is already in the planning stages. We will be at Kimball Jenkins once again. Of course weāll be looking for designers soon, regardless of your level of experience. But right now we are looking for volunteers to serve on the committee that will make it happen.
Please consider joining us to plan our signature event of the year. Our planning meetings are short and sweet, and if we have some help from a few more volunteers, our workload will be light as well. Call, text or email me as soon as you can!
