JANUARY 2025 Updates and Events

Greetings, Gardeners, and Happy New Year! If it's January, it must be Art & Bloom!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to stow away those decorations and dig into our annual signature event -- it's almost here!

As always, remember to scroll all the way down this email so you're in the know on these and all the other CGC happenings.

President's Note

Welcome to our newest member, Donna Love.

Donna will be participating in Art & Bloom so please look for her there and introduce yourself.

-- Gena

It’s that time of year, everyone. Art and Bloom time!

Our event takes place at Kimball Jenkins from

Thursday through Saturday, January 23rd through 25th.

Many of our members are participating as floral designers, alongside community members and professionals. The Women’s Caucus for Art has provided the art, which has been curated by our member Inez McDermott. The arrangements will be in the mansion, but the carriage house will also be open with additional pieces for viewing.

All of you are invited to join us for the sneak preview on Thursday the 23rd at

1:00 pm, so mark your calendars now.

We are now actively looking for hosts for the 3 days of our exhibit. Your help in this makes a huge difference in the show. Our hours are a little different this year: We’re looking for people to host for 1-3:30 and 3:30-5 on Thursday, and for as many people as can attend (and their guests) to come for our opening reception from 5-7 that evening.

On Friday we’re open 10-6, and will be looking for volunteers for 4 shifts: 10-12, 12-2, 2-4 and 4-6. On Saturday we’re open from 10-4, with hosting shifts from 10-12, 12-2 and 2-4.

You will be receiving a separate email from Nicki Kilfara, our host coordinator, regarding this. Please respond to her at nkilfara@hotmail.com about your availability.

This promises to be a wonderful event. We’ll look forward to seeing you there!

Happy New Year,

Millie LaFontaine

Looking back at

DECEMBER 2024 ACTIVITIES

Friendly Kitchen Decorations

In early December, members of the Community Service Committee had a lot of fun making new seasonal table decorations for the Friendly Kitchen.

Christmas Party Recap

On December 5th we had a lovely Holiday Gathering at the Woman's Club of Concord. The Chamberlain House was decorated for the Holidays and made for a homey and festive place to gather. It was so nice to see those who attended!  Thank you everyone for your contributions of food and wine;  thanks as well for all of your donations to the Women's Crisis Center.  The collection of items we put together was greatly appreciated.

Merrimack County Nursing Home Greens Workshop

December also brought our annual Greens Workshop, held together with staff from the Merrimack County Nursing Home. This workshop is a favorite activity for both Nursing Home residents and Garden Club members, and was made possible by the hard work of the Community Service Committee and donations from members and Black Forest Nursery. Special thanks to Melissa Smart for again spearheading this effort! Many Club members report this is their favorite Garden Club activity of the year.

Hort Corner

As we enter the depths of winter, remember that this time of year is beloved by gardeners across the Northern Hemisphere as a time to rest, dream and plan for the upcoming season. If you're able to do that this winter, keep in mind the local resources available to us, including a wonderful collection of books at the Concord Public Library.

It's also time to sharpen and sanitize our tools, order seeds and plan their starting schedule, and to nurture our houseplants. For additional tips on these and other winter tasks, check out UNH Extension's January Gardening Tips, and consider subscribing to their monthly newsletter, packed with local gardening information and tips you can use year-round. Our trees need winter care too!

Black Forest Nursery is another local resource that's providing a robust schedule of gardening-related courses this spring. Classes last an hour and are free of charge!

Orchids!

Lastly, Lauren Savage thought we'd all enjoy getting a taste of the lush tropical Costa Rican rainforest. When she returns she can tell us their names!

See you at Art & Bloom!
