Sunday, March 8th!!
President's Message
In February my husband Bob and I hosted the family of a Spanish woman who was an exchange student with us 25 years ago. I really wanted there to be good snow for these Madrileños, and they had a great time building a snow fort, ice skating, sledding and skiing. Now they are back in Spain and I’m over the snow. Can’t wait for it all to be gone. If you feel the same way, be sure to check out our upcoming Garden Club programs which will help you start thinking about warm weather and growing things.
The Garden Club Board met this week and clarified that the Annual Meeting is a meeting of the Active Members of the Club. Since the meeting is for the purpose of electing new officers, Associate Members, who have decided to step back from active participation in the Club and cannot vote or hold office, will not be included. Any Associate Member is welcome to return to Active Member status at any time.
I’m looking forward to welcoming our newer members (less than 3 years of membership) at a get together this coming week, and to seeing all of you at one of our upcoming programs.

Have you ever wondered about the hidden messages blooming within famous paintings? Throughout the history of art, flowers have been more than just beautiful decorations - they've served as powerful symbols, carrying secret meanings known to artists and their patrons. From the purity of lilies in Renaissance Madonnas to the fleeting nature of life represented by wilting bouquets in Dutch still lifes, each petal and stem tells a story. This fascinating exploration of flora in art will unveil the language of flowers, revealing how these delicate blooms have shaped our visual culture and continue to inspire artists - and flower lovers! - to this day.

Community Information and
Volunteer Corner
Volunteer Opportunity at NH State Prison Greenhouse
If anyone is looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, NH State Prison is hoping to recruit some farm and greenhouse volunteers, to work on gardening skill building with inmates who are about to be released.
INFORMATION
The farm/greenhouse are located behind State Prison Retail shop on North State Street in Concord. They hold an annual plant sale in mid-May, including 15,000 annuals, perennials and vegetables. They also sell 12,000 mums in the fall, bundled firewood, and offer furniture restoration.
They have a new farm manager (past manager of 30 years retired and moved to Arizona)
who works with transitioning inmates, (not behind prison walls) building skills to take with them after transitioning to society. They want to learn and be successful.
What DOC is looking for in volunteers, who would be helping men being released from prison to learn gardening skills:
- Have an understanding of developing plants from seed, watering and fertilizing
- Volunteers work alongside 3-4 transitional inmates to teach and guide (can get hands
dirty or not).
- Another employee is always present, so volunteers aren’t in the greenhouse alone with inmates.
- Usually only 3-4 inmates in the greenhouse with volunteers
- Greenhouse work is done from 8-2pm Mon.-Fri., some weekends
- Volunteers wouldn’t need to be there the entire time. They have choice of times
Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Debra Shepard, NH Dept of Corrections Rehabilitative Services - 603.271.3904 - who would then refer them to Jessica Gagnon,
who works with 300 volunteers in the entire prison system.

Art & Bloom Redux
Another opportunity to enjoy gorgeous blossoms, close to home - March 12-15 brings Art & Bloom to you again, but this time at the Currier Museum in Manchester.
Click here for more information and to purchase tickets, and get ready to see if their floral displays rival ours!

The UNH Master Gardener Program is once again offering monthly gardening workshops now through October at the NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center in Auburn, NH. From UNH and NH Audubon, following are links to several upcoming online webinar opportunities from The NH Butterfly Monitoring Network - important information for gardeners who want to understand native species and pollinators.

Lastly, from UNH Extension:
Happy March Granite State Gardeners |
As we get closer to springtime here in New Hampshire, it’s time to start thinking seriously about the upcoming growing season, even if we still have snow on the ground. If you’re a little bit stuck in the winter mindset still, here is a non-exhaustive list of springtime tasks to help jumpstart your gardening brain and some resources for more information:
Spring will be here before you know it, so hopefully these resources will help you to feel a little more prepared for the growing season. Remember, you can always call (1-877-EXT-GROW) the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline or use our web form (extension.unh.edu/ask) to ask our Education Center volunteers garden-related questions. Happy Spring!
